Leeds based songsmith Greet (aka Matthew Broadley) brings his first full length album ‘I Know How To Die’.
A new missive that grows the magical world of Harmonium driven folk heard on E.P’s Harmonium 1 & Harmonium 2. Blurring the lines of traditional folk and drone, diving further into the worlds between reality and fantasy, creating a wonderfully unique cinematic, doom laden atmosphere.
This is the New Folk Revival but not as we know it.
‘I Know How To Die’ seeks to find solace, beauty and magic between chaos and tragedy. Harmonium driven drones and melodies combine with pastoral singing to create its distinctive brand of poetic, dark folk. Meditative drums weave with moments of flute, bells, strings and guitars to take you from moors, woodlands, taverns and ancient battlefields. There is a wanting for peace but knowing it won’t come without action, harkening to revolutionaries throughout time, from the revolters of the Middle Ages, to the PAL action activists of today.
Songs “No More” and “Leather Knight” acting as a call to arms, with choruses laced with plans and demands. There is a yearning and search for growth both personally and for the world at large, with “The Seer” and “Eulogy” diving deeper inward into self reflection and the transformation that comes with age.
Instrumental passages “Revelry”, “The Battle” and “The Dig” further broaden the sonic picture - from the joyous melodies of “Revelry” to the lurching and swirling motifs of “The Battle”.
While ‘I Know How To Die’ explores the darkness there is always an air of hope, joy and expectation.
Live shows with One Leg One Eye, Steve Von Till and Ora Cogan have cemented Greet’s ability to mesmerise audiences. With further appearances at 2025’s Roadburn and the weird and wonderful folk festivals of the UK have helped to build a rapid cult following.
I know how to die,
Yet I am here still, battle worn,
My purpose not fulfilled.
A song is calling and still,
I am here
‘I Know How To Die’ was written and self recorded at Matthew’s humble home surroundings in
Leeds over the early months of 2025, with additional Violin by Simon Barr and Poem reading by Steve Von Till.
Working in close collaboration once again with mix & mastering engineer David
Campbell ([email protected]) and photographer Richard Newby to bring the final vision to life.
